At SCAD, you’ll frame your own distinct point of view, learning the full spectrum of Photography News — historic and analog processes through modern and next-generation digital technologies — on the way to launching your creative career. You’ll also have the chance to bolster your photography skills by exploring related creative fields like advertising or graphic design. All your creative work will be supported by academic staff working at the forefront of photographic research and innovation who have years of professional experience. This informs the design and delivery of our BA Photography course, allowing us to respond to innovation in the sector, facilitate exciting industry-led projects, and speaker presentations. Our students are part of the organising committee for our Annual Public Photography Lectures which bring high-profile British and international photographers to ARU. Working with state-of-the-art equipment and evolving dynamic concepts, students produce compelling work to build a solid portfolio. Internships are a form of work-integrated learning that links classroom learning with work experience within a professional environment. Internship work terms are related to the academic studies of the student and may be paid or unpaid. You’ll apply theory to practice, develop a meaningful view of the working world, and cultivate an awareness of yourself as a professional. Students have interned at Saturday Night Live, Refinery 29, Vice, Vogue, Nan Goldin, Lois Greenfield, Brooklyn Museum, Richard Avedon Foundation, major ad agencies, and InStyle.

If you have been out of education for 3 years or more and have a grade C GCSE in English Language or equivalent, you are eligible for our entry scheme for mature learners. It’s a scheme that recognises non-traditional entry qualifications and experience for entry onto this course. On each module you will receive ongoing feedback on your work from staff and fellow students. This will help you reflect and refine your work before your final submission or exhibition at the end of the module.
Our studios are outfitted with state-of-the-art DSLR, medium format digital and video cameras. Students also work with advanced strobe and LED studio/location lighting. Sheridan’s labs have advanced displays and printers, the full Adobe Creative Cloud software suite and Capture One Pro software.

It can be easy to look at top photographers and think that they have simply unattainable levels of skill and natural talent and as such, that a normal person can never reach such heights. However, the truth is a lot more complex than that, and it is something that you should really think about as you grow and mature as a photographer. Graduates of Sheridan’s Honours Bachelor of Photography program begin their photography careers as assistants or freelance photographers, and then work their way into full-time employment or operate their own studios.
This category actively encourages the creative use of the medium of photography in all its forms, from photograms to cutting-edge photographic techniques. Subject matter can be varied and may include abstract and conceptual ideas, but a creative concept and thematic link between the images is key. In a way, every technical choice is really an artistic choice in disguise.
Recent BA Fine Art students have spent part of their study with partner institutions in Leipzig, Madrid, Marseille, Milan, New York and Tokyo. All our students have the opportunity and are supported in exhibiting their work to an external audience. During the second year all our students can take part in a wide variety of seminars and workshops hosted by a variety of external arts organisations.
